MALVERN, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA) is taking the lead in identity theft education awareness among law enforcement officials during National Consumer Protection Week, March 7–13. FBI-LEEDA partnered with LifeLock, the industry leader in identity theft protection, two years ago to bring law enforcement officials together to discuss current trends in the crime, as well as share best practices and discuss the various investigative techniques.
“Through National Consumer Protection Week and beyond, FBI-LEEDA has demonstrated their unwavering commitment to educating and empowering law enforcement executives to best protect consumers on the front lines.”
“National Consumer Protection Week gives our organization the opportunity to make sure identity thieves and other criminals know that we are doing everything in our power to help protect American citizens,” said Donald A. Dappen, President of FBI-LEEDA. “There is a continuous need for increased law enforcement education and more savvy investigation techniques and methods; and we are committed to making it happen.”
During National Consumer Protection Week, FBI-LEEDA will be communicating various identity protection measures to its membership base so that those fighting the crime on the front lines can protect themselves as well. Members of FBI-LEEDA will also be provided with a set of best practices to support victims of the crime as they begin to remediate from the theft.
“FBI-LEEDA continues to take a proactive position in the fight against this epidemic crime of identity theft,” said Todd Davis, Chairman and CEO of LifeLock. “Through National Consumer Protection Week and beyond, FBI-LEEDA has demonstrated their unwavering commitment to educating and empowering law enforcement executives to best protect consumers on the front lines.”
More than 11 million Americans were estimated to be victims of identity fraud in 2009, according to the “2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report” recently released by Javelin Strategy & Research. Up from 9 million in 2008, this study highlights the fact that consumers need to be more advised on how they can put stronger safeguards on their private information and what they can do to protect themselves. FBI-LEEDA works to keep law enforcement officials across the country up to date on identity theft trends and field techniques for solving crimes and stopping more thieves.
